Beginning with his first piano lesson conducted in his father’s lap at the age of six, Nathan has been a lifelong musician. Many years of piano, guitar, composition, and voice lessons later, Nathan graduated Summa Cum Laude from UGA in 2018 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition and Certificate in Music Business.
As an instructor and leader, Nathan has had the pleasure of being Music Director for several musicals such as Big Fish and Mary Poppins. Currently he serves as Assistant Conductor for Veritas, a select choral ensemble comprised of UGA students and alumni. In addition, as Minister of Music at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church Nathan rehearses, conducts, and accompanies the church choir.
As an instrumentalist and vocalist, Nathan has performed in a wide variety of venues with diverse repertoire. Whether in a coffee shop or a concert hall, he feels at home on a piano bench, a guitar stool, or behind a mic. Nathan has sung in choirs since high school and as a Hodgson Singer at UGA he performed in All-State choirs, GMEA and ACDA conferences, and gave numerous world premieres of new pieces. One standout experience for Nathan was when he was invited as a guest lecturer to Colby College to perform and present on Morton Feldman’s Palais de Mari, a mystical twenty-five minute piano piece requiring constant focus and counting.
As a composer, Nathan enjoys writing and arranging for all manner of instruments. He has received commissions and awards for his music along with performances at notable events such as the Hodgson School of Music’s 2018 Commencement Ceremony. He especially enjoys composing for the piano and voice, and his proudest composition is a fifteen-minute song cycle for soprano and piano entitled Of Longing.
Nathan chose to make music his vocation because his lifelong aim is to teach people to recognize, appreciate, and strive for beauty. He considers music to be one of the sweetest gifts the earth has to offer and is eager to share its blessing with all.
