Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Vivian Cheng began her piano studies at the age of 6, studying with Janice Wong and Dr. Elena Cholakova, and violin studies at the age of 9, studying with Thomas Ludwig and later Jun-Ching Lin. She is currently a third year at the University of Georgia, studying under Dr. Michael Heald. She has participated in numerous orchestras, including the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, GMEA All State Orchestra, and Georgia Piedmont Youth Orchestra and has held principle positions in the Fulton County Honor Orchestra and the UGA Symphony Orchestra. During past summers, she was selected to participate in the 2015 Governor’s Honors Program and has attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival and the Franklin Pond Chamber Music Program.
Vivian has performed as a pianist, violinist, and chamber musician throughout her career, giving her debut with the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra at the age of 13 as the winner of the Rising Star Piano Competition and later performing in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. On campus, Vivian is an active chamber musician as well as the co-president of the UGA Chamber Music Society. She also enjoys playing for musicals, participating in local productions of Cabaret, Legally Blonde, and Next to Normal.
